About Funza Lushaka Bursary:

The Funza Lushaka Bursary was specifically founded to provide financial aid to students who want to study teaching in public higher learning institutions. By offering comprehensive financial support, it allows students to focus on their education without the stress of tuition fees and living expenses. Recipients are required to teach in public schools for four years, helping to address the need for qualified teachers in South Africa.

 

FIELD OF STUDY

The Funza Lushaka bursary programme is open to students who are pursuing or want to pursue the following undergraduate education qualifications:

4-year Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education (B. Ed. ECCE) for ECD Grade RR- R 

Foundation Phase (Grade R-3): Majoring with any two of the following priority area subjects; (South African Indigenous Languages, Neurodevelopment Needs, Braille and South African Sign Language)

Intermediate and Senior Phase (Grade 4-9): Majoring with any two of the following priority area subjects; (Languages, Mathematics and Natural Science & Technology)

FET phase (Grade 10-12): Majoring with any two of the following priority area subjects; (Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Technology, Civil Technology, Computer Applications Technology, Electrical Technology, Engineering Graphics & Design, Geography, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Technology, Physical Sciences, Languages, Maritime studies, Coding & Robitics, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science)

 

FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY COVERS THE FOLLOWING EXPENSES: 

  • Tuition
  • Textbooks/Learning Materials
  • Accommodation 
  • Meals
  • Stipend/Allowance

NB: The bursary is capped at a specific value, where the university fees are more than the capped value, the bursars will have to top up from their funds.

 

To qualify for the Funza Lushaka Teaching Bursary You must meet the following Requirements

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must have passed grade 12 or currently in grade 12
  • You must be 30 years old or younger, at the time of applying.
  • You must have been accepted to study towards a BEd degree, specialising in at least 2 of the priority subject areas)
  • You must be accepted or studying full-time an undergraduate qualification at an accredited South African public tertiary institution
  • You must be willing to teach at any selected school after graduation
  • You must not have a criminal record
  • You must have strong results/academic record
  • You must not be a Higher Education Institution employees (or a spouse, dependent or child of a Higher Education Institution employee)
  • You must have passion for teaching
  • You must have obtained a minimum of 50% in Mathematics and English in Grade 12 results.
  • You must not have any other teaching qualifications

 

How to apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary for the 2025 Academic Year

  1. Visit the Funza Lushaka Application Website: www.eservices.gov.za
  2. Register by providing personal information
  3. Login to the system using user name and password created when registering
  4. On the e-Services Menu select Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
  5. Enter the OTP received on the preferred channel
  6. Accept the Terms and Conditions
  7. On the dashboard menu click on the 2025 application button
  8. Follow the steps to complete the required field with your information
  9. Upload the needed documents, these documents are; Your certified ID copy, Your academic records (if currently at university), Your matric certificate, Your latest academic transcript (if you’re already at university) and Certified ID copies of parents or guardian
  10. Accept declaration and submit your Funza Lushaka Bursary Application.

NB: Hard copy applications are not allowed. ONLY online applications are accepted for 2025 applications.

 

FACTORS TO NOTE BEFORE APPLYING FOR THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY FOR THE 2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • All applicants are advised to check their record at South African Police Services, Department of Justice & Correctional Services and Department of Social Development.
  • In 2025 Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) will not be funded
  • The following subjects in 2025 will also not be considered for funding (History, Geography, Accounting, Economics, Business Studies and Physical Education, English, Afrikaans, Religious Studies, Music, Dance and Art) this is due to oversupply.
  • Combinations of Language and one content are discouraged as they disadvantage schools during timetabling
  • You must meet all the set requirements and Double-check that you have no disqualifying factors such as a criminal record.
  • Make sure you have all necessary documents ready. Incomplete applications can lead to disqualification.

CLOSING DATE:

The closing date for the Funza Lushaka Bursary applications for the 2025 academic year is the 26th of January 2025 for new students and the closing date for returning students is the 30th of November 2024. Late or incomplete applications will not be processed. Please submit your application fully and by the due date.
