The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) has announced an extension of the deadline for their bursary applications for the 2025 academic year. About the Mining Qualifications Authority Bursary Scheme:

The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a South African statutory body established in terms of the Mining Qualifications Act, 2008 (Act No. 63 of 2008). Its primary function is to develop, implement, and manage a national system of qualifications for the mining industry. The MQA was created in response to the need for a comprehensive and standardized system of qualifications for the mining sector in South Africa.

The MQA Bursary Scheme is designed to support students pursuing qualifications in the mining industry. The bursaries are aimed at assisting students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who demonstrate academic excellence. This initiative aims to cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce within the sector by providing much-needed support to deserving individuals.

MINING QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY BURSARY COVERS THE FOLLOWING TERTIARY EXPENSES:

  • Tuition
  • Registration
  • Textbooks 
  • Meals
  • Accommodation fees
  • private accommodation allowance
  • Allowance
  • The employed persons’ bursary will cover tuition fees and allowances for books.
  • NB: Funding for international study tours, conferences and seminars will not be considered.

 

Mining Qualifications Authority Bursary Requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be in grade 12 or have completed grade 12
  • Must be studying or intend to study one of the qualifications listed above
  • Must be studying or intend to study at a TVET College, public university or public university of technology
  • Preference will also be given to students from the following provinces: Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, North-West and KwaZulu-Natal
  • Must be unemployed/Employed (If unemployed, must remain unemployed for the duration of studies)

Selection criteria for the MQA unemployed bursary applicants:

  • Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (White males under the age of 35 years will be considered).
  • Financially needy applicants with a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per annum
  • Female applicants.
  • Applicants living in rural communities.
  • Applicants who have applied to study at their local tertiary institutions.
  • Candidates with a strong academic record.
  • People with disabilities.

Selection Criteria for the MQA employed bursary applicants:

  • The bursary for employed persons is available to applicants who are PRESENTLY employed within the mining and minerals sector, who would like to pursue studies for a qualification relevant to the mining related sector.
  • Historically Disadvantage Individuals (White males under the age of 35 years will also be considered).
  • Applicants should be from MQA levy-paying or levy-exempted employers.
  • People with disabilities.

Deadline for the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) Bursary

The Mining Qualifications Authority has re-opened its bursary applications for the 2025 academic year.
