These higher institutions listed above are accredited by the South African Nursing Council and other education bodies. The public nursing colleges offer FREE Nursing courses that are funded by the department of Health. Accommodation, tuition fees and food is paid for. Prospective students who want to pursue nursing in public universities, will need to pay for their own fees unless they obtain funding from private bursary providers or from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme

Public Universities offer a bachelors degree in nursing while majority of private and public nursing colleges offer diploma and higher certificate in nursing courses. The diploma in nursing course is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to work as registered nurses, while on the other hand the higher certificate in nursing course acts as a bridging course to mainstream nursing course (Diploma in nursing /Bachelor of Nursing).

 

Nursing Requirements:

To become a registered nurse in South Africa, formal education and training are required. This typically involves completing a nursing qualification at a college, university, or university of technology. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and nursing practice.

The requirements for nursing differ from institution to institution. What is important is to visit each institution website or download their prospectuses to check requirements of your desired nursing course. In south Africa nursing is classified into 3 categories. First there is higher certificate in nursing which requires less admission requirements, then there's diploma in nursing which requires not high admission requirements. Lastly there's a degree in nursing which is 4 years and strictly requires more admission requirements.

 

NURSING BRIDGING COURSE

For those who don't meet the direct entry requirements for a nursing diploma/degree, bridging courses like higher certificate in Nursing can provide a pathway to further studies. Completing the higher certificate in Nursing course will allow learners to enrol in diploma or degree courses, allowing them to be professional nurses that can serve the community at large. 

NOTE: Please be informed that the aim of this course is not to put you in a working environment, but to prepare you for rigorous training regime when you finally do enrol for the Bachelor’s degree in nursing programme.
